What do I do as a social media intern?
-
As a social media intern for The Caravan, India's finest magazine of politics and culture, I played an important role in the social media team. I am responsible for drafting tweets and Instagram captions for media outlets.
-
I go through the archives and read through the articles and see what articles are worth replugging.
-
Sometimes we (the team) decide to go with the current events and breaking news.
-
I also work on creating posts like designing PQ cards and mockups for the issue and designing Ad banners for Amazon.
How do I create or schedule posts?
-
Drafting tweets and drafting Instagram captions are two different tasks. Tweets only require 280 characters but Instagram captions require 2,200 characters count. To be able to fit important eye-catching information is important.
-
I read through the pieces that are scheduled to go up and pick out captions that fit Twitter and fit for Instagram.
-
Draft the document and get it approved by the editor and it's good to go.
-
For Twitter, I use the tweet deck to schedule tweets for the next day(s) and for Facebook I use the meta business suite to schedule the posts.
-
As of date, Instagram doesn't have a scheduling option, so I post all the evening posts on time.
What did I learn from this internship?
-
I love social media and to get a paid internship in one of India's popular magazines is always an honour.
-
I learned more in one week and Caravan than I did 3 years in my undergrad. That's why people say experience in your field is very important.
-
I learned the value of time management and being a part of a team.
-
Working in a team, I was given direct contact with everyone in the team and office members and I had to contact them directly for necessary issues like proofing and editing.
-
I was blessed with a very sweet supervisor. She put her full faith in me and gave me work and responsibilities that gave me this amazing experience.
-
She taught me the ins and outs of social media. We had so many calls and briefings about the captions and posts. We discussed and planned posts and content with regard to the insights we get from each app.
-
Attending all these team briefings and meetings made me realize how much effort goes behind one social media post. So many people work behind the scenes for a company to work smoothly.
Amazon Ad Campaign
Apart from drafting tweets and Instagram captions, I was incharge of creating the ad for the magazine. Using my photoshop skill, I was able to create these simple and minimal styled Ads.

Eyecatching Mockups
Mockups are a great way to see how your product looks like. This was one of the mockups I created for the October 2022 issue which was later used in all of Caravan's social media.

Pull Quotes
Following the in-house style and aesthetic, I created PQ cards or pull quote cards for the magazine's socials. All the posts and pull quotes I've posted and drafted captions for did really well.
